Announcement of the eThemis 2021 Semi-final Results

Semi-Final A: EU and European Criminal Procedure

Three teams defended their written papers and debated the topic of the EU Criminal Procedure with other colleagues and the members of the jury. The competition was held online from 4th to 5th of May. The Members of the jury were Mr David J. Dickson, Head of Extradition, Scottish Prosecution Service, Ms Christine Gödl; Judge, Federal Ministry of Justice (Austria) and Mr Petros Alikakos; Judge and Trainer at the National School of Judiciary (Greece)

The Jury members awarded first place to Team Bulgaria, second place to Team Portugal and third place to Team Hungary. Written paper to be included in the THEMIS 2021 Annual Journal will be from Team Portugal.

 

Semi-Final B: EU and European Family Law

Five teams defended their written papers and presented interesting new cases in the field of EU family law. The competition was held online from 1stth to 3rd of June. The participants prepared a written paper, video presentation and the Q&A session with the members of the jury. The jury members were Ms Thalia Kruger; Professor at the University of Antwerp, Mr Matthias Neumayr; Vice President of the Austrian Supreme Court and Ms Boriana Musseva; Head of Department at Sofia University, Attorney and Lecturer at National Institute for Justice.

The Jury members awarded first place to Team Serbia, second place to Team Romania and third place to Team Albania. Written papers to be included in the THEMIS 2021 Annual Journal will be from Team Serbia and Team Romania.


Semi-Final C: EU and European Civil Procedure

Eight teams defended their written papers and debated the topic of the EU Civil procedure with other colleagues and the members of the jury. The Members of the jury were Mr Aleš Galič Professor of International Private Law, Mr Apostolos Anthimos; Attorney at law, Trainer at the National School of Judiciary (Greece) and Ms Danutė Jočienė; President of the Constitutional Court of Lithuania, former Judge at the ECtHR.

The Jury members awarded first place to Team Czechia, second place to Team Germany and third place to Team Romania. Written papers to be included in the THEMIS 2021 Annual Journal will be from Team Czechia, Team Germany, and Team Romania.


Semi-Final D: Judicial Ethics and Professional Conduct

Seven teams defended their written papers and presented interesting new cases in the field of EU Judicial Ethics. The competition was held online from 13th to 15th of July. The participates prepared a written paper, video presentation and there was a Q&A session with the jury members and other participating teams. The jury members were Mr Jeremy Cooper; Professor, Retired Judge and Consultant, Ms Cristina San Juan Serrano; Judicial Integrity and Rule of Law Specialist, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Mr Goran Selanec; Justice of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia. Ms Serrano presented the activities of UNODC to the Themis participants and informed them of the current documentation and e-learning resources.

The Jury members awarded first place to Team Serbia, second place to Team France and third place to Team Spain. Written papers to be included in the THEMIS 2021 Annual Journal will be from Team Serbia, Team France and Team Spain.


It has been a challenge for everyone, but it all resulted in great success.
