Course Description

Judicial and prosecutorial professional ethics are being discussed all over the world, during the last few years increasingly also in Europe. Other countries, such as Italy, Poland, Lithuania, and Estonia, have developed national ethical rules that were or are supposed to be adopted as law. In Austria the Association of Austrian Judges presented a draft ethical basic declaration on judicial behavior. Based on specific examples from foreign countries, the conference aims at informing judges and prosecutors about the state of developments, encouraging own discussions of the topic, and posing the following questions:- Could and should judges and prosecutors in Germany adopt ethical principles for their behavior?- Which ethical behavioral rules should apply?- Should the rules be put into writing?- Which institution could ensure compliance with the rules? The conference will also be offered as part of the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN). It is particularly suited also for foreign participants.
