  • The Office of the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Estonia and the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Lithuania become full EJTN Members.
  • EJTN will be better able to help foster a European area of justice and promote trust between judicial systems and practitioners.

EJTN is delighted to welcome into its family two new Members, both formerly long-time EJTN Observers. At EJTN’s 2017 General Assembly held in June 2017, the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Estonia and the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Lithuania were both unanimously voted in as full Members.

The Estonian Prosecutor’s Office
The Estonian Prosecutor’s Office is a government agency within the sphere of the Estonian Ministry of Justice. The Prosecutor’s Office directs pre-trial criminal proceedings, ensuring lawfulness and effectiveness thereof. It also represents the public prosecution in court, participates in planning surveillance activities necessary for prevention and identification of crimes, and performs other duties assigned to the Prosecutor’s Office by the law.

The Prosecutor’s Office, as an EJTN Observer, has been actively cooperating with EJTN since 2004. Also, the Prosecutor’s Office continues to be very active in international cooperation, having cooperative bonds with some 16 different organisations and groups.

The judicial training activities for prosecutors and for administrative personnel are coordinated by the Human Resources Division of the Office of the Prosecutor General with the help of the Training Council of the prosecutors, which consists of four prosecutors from different district prosecutor’s offices, one prosecutor from Prosecution Department, the Prosecutor General and the head of HR Division. The Training Council meets twice a year, to analyse the training needs, find the trainers and fix the content of the training plan.

Office of the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Lithuania
The Lithuanian Prosecutor’s Office is an autonomous and independent state authority undertaking the functions established by the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, the Law on the Prosecutor’s Office or other law. The Prosecutor’s Office helps ensure lawfulness and assists courts in the administration of justice.

The mission of activities of the Prosecutor’s Office is to effectively defend the public interest through the application of criminal and civil law measures. Away from this, the Prosecutor’s Office also undertakes work with the legislative field, protecting public interest, dealing with petitions and involvement in criminal intelligence activities.

The Training Division, an autonomous division of the Prosecutor General’s Office, organises training events, also via courses arranged by various international organisations. The strategic purpose of the Training Division is to organise qualitative, purposeful and continuous training as well as to address the qualification development of prosecutors, assistants to prosecutors and other lawyers, which fulfil the needs of the Lithuanian legal system.

Stronger together
EJTN is proud to bring together the judicial training institutions from all EU Members States. With the addition of the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Estonia and the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Lithuania as full Members, EJTN will be better able to help foster a European area of justice and promote trust between judicial systems and practitioners.
